Comment: This is the first case of New World Screwworm in a horse this century. The horse with the confirmed infestation of New World screwworm is a mare located in Presidio County, Texas. The infested wound is a long wound on the mare's hind quarter from an unknown source. Larvae were located in the deepest part of the wound, notable because it’s important that animal owners look closely at any wounds they suspect and collect maggots from all areas of the wound if required. The horse is not known to have moved onto or off of the premises within the tracing window. She is a horse that is used on the ranch.

For additional information, please see the USDA NWS dashboard page https://www.aphis.usda.gov/animals/animal-health/livestock-and-poultry-disease/stop-screwworm/current-status/confirmed.
