Strangles
Broward County, FL
Confirmed case(s): Official Quarantine
Two New Strangles cases in Broward County, Florida A new strangles cases in Broward County originally reported by a referral veterinarian hospital. The owner of the referred horse had been trying to self treat since early August when the horse arrived from Texas. The referred horse was diagnosed with purpura hemorrhagica. Upon inspection of the index premise, three of three remaining horses were clinical to varying degrees. An additional horse at the index premise had moved two days prior to another location with three other horses. Both properties were placed under quarantine. These are the first two cases for Broward County and the 26th and 27th cases for Florida in 2015.

Strangles
Hillsborough County, FL

Three New Strangles cases in Hillsborough County Florida. On the first premise, one out of 47 horses is affected. The affected horse was pasture mates with another horse that moved prior to the original horse displaying clinical signs of submandibular swelling and abscess drainage which started on October 7th. The pasture mate has a fever but no clinical signs at the time. The third premise has a horse that came from a kill facility in another state. The horse arrived symptom free per the reporting veterinarian. .All three premises have been placed under quarantine. These are the first three cases for Hillsborough County and the 23nd through 25th case for the State in 2015.

West Nile Virus
Marion County, FL

A new case in Marion County has been confirmed with WNV. The one year old, unvaccinated Thoroughbred had not been off the property in the past 6 weeks. Clinical signs began September 28th and the horse is currently being treated symptomatically. The case was confirmed positive on October 6th. This is the first confirmed case in Marion County and the first positive in Florida since the beginning of the year.

West Nile Virus
Crittenden and Nelson Counties, KY

The Kentucky State Veterinarian's office announced Oct. 9 that two additional horses—one from Crittenden County and one from Nelson County—have tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV), bringing the commonwealth’s total for the year to eight.

BROOMFIELD, Colo. – As of 10/7/2015, the Colorado Department of Agriculture’s State Veterinarian’s Office has 42 locations in 14 counties under quarantine after horses, mules, and cattle herds tested positive for Vesicular Stomatitis (VS). An equine herpesvirus quarantine at Parx Racing will remain in place until Oct. 29, provided no other horses test positive for the disease.

Eastern Equine Encephalitis
Chesapeake, VA

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) today announced the third case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) in a Virginia horse this year. The horse, a 19-week-old Racking filly, was from Chesapeake. Because of its young age, it had not been vaccinated yet. The horse was euthanized September 24 due to the severity of the illness.

Equine Herpes Viruses
Parx racetrack, PA
Confirmed case(s): Official Quarantine
Officials at Parx Racing confirmed on Friday that a horse stabled at the track has tested positive for equine herpesvirus. The sick horse, which was in the care of Blaine Servis, has been removed to Mid-Atlantic Equine Medical Center in New Jersey. No horses will be permitted to leave Parx until the track receives authorization from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. Horses stabled in Servis’s barn will not be permitted to race, including those under the care of other trainers in the same building. Horses are being permitted to ship in to race, but will not be allowed to leave until the quarantine period ends.

Eastern Equine Encephalitis

A horse from Hopkinton has tested positive for the Eastern equine encephalitis virus, commonly called Triple E, according to St. Lawrence County Public Health Director James O. Rich. This is the third confirmed Triple E case in the state this year involving horses, with the others occurring in Franklin and Wayne counties, according to the state Department of Health.
