January 22, 2016 Equine Herpes Viruses Sunland Racetrack, NM Confirmed case(s): Quarantine
The New Mexico Livestock Board and the New Mexico Racing Commission are working with officials at Sunland Park Racetrack in southern New Mexico following confirmation of the neurotropic form of EHV-1 in five horses at the track. The first confirmation was made Thursday. By order of the New Mexico Livestock Board, the quarantine perimeter includes Sunland Park Racetrack, as well as local horse-training centers Frontera, Jovi, and Lazy S. Exposed barns have been identified, and an isolation barn to treat symptomatic horses has been established. Additional biosecurity measures are being taken. In addition to state government’s regulatory measures, Sunland Park is suspending racing during the quarantine period.
January 22, 2016 Strangles Hillsborough County, FL Information Only
A new strangles case in Hillsborough County, Florida was reported on January 20th. The case was imported from a Louisiana kill pen with current OCVI but was clinical at time of entry into Florida. The issuing veterinarian has been contacted about this practice. This is the first confirmed case in Hillsborough County and the first positive in Florida for 2016.
January 21, 2016 Equine Herpes Viruses Sunland Racetrack, NM Confirmed case(s): Quarantine
Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino has confirmed one horse has tested positive for EHV (Equine Herpes Virus). The test results were released January 21, 2016. Immediate steps are being taken ensure the safety of all horses on the grounds. As of January 21, Sunland Park will not be allowing any horse on or off its grounds. The restriction will be in place until the environment is confirmed free from EHV. Sunland Park is planning to continue with live racing on Friday, January 22 as planned.
January 08, 2016 Equine Herpes Viruses Bucks County, PA Confirmed case(s): Quarantine
Two additional horses have developed mild neurological signs with limited rear limb ataxia. These horses were previously febrile several days ago and their temperatures had returned to normal. They were sampled for EHV-1 yesterday and samples were forwarded to UCD. That brings to total number of living horses in the stable with neurologic signs to 8.
January 07, 2016 Equine Herpes Viruses Los Angeles County, CA Confirmed case(s): Quarantine
January 6, 2016: A draft cross gelding displaying neurologic signs has been confirmed positive for the non-neuropathogenic strain of Equine Herpesvirus-1. A small percentage of the non-neuropathogenic infected horses can display neurologic signs compatible with equine herpes myeloencephalopathy which is a reportable disease in California. The positive horse has been quarantined and isolated. No horses have entered or left the premises since September. All exposed horses are being monitored and temperatures are being taken twice daily. Current status in the quarantined Doylestown stable: 4 horses euthanized due to severe EHM; 6 horses with neurological impairment being treated on farm; 3 horses that have had fevers but so far no neurological impairment; 38 horses so far not showing any signs of EHV-1 infection
January 06, 2016 Eastern Equine Encephalitis Holmes County, FL Information Only
New case in Holmes County was confirmed on January 5th with EEE. The clinical signs began on December 22, 2015 and the horse died of natural causes on December 31. The horse had no travel history with the past month and was last vaccinated in spring of 2015. This is the fourth confirmed case in Holmes County and the 23rd positive for Florida in 2015.
January 04, 2016 Equine Herpes Viruses Bucks County, PA Confirmed case(s): Quarantine
Update on EHM outbreak in Pennsylvania. 12-21-2015 – Two horses observed with clinical signs consistent with EHV-1 (EHM) at the index premises, a pleasure-riding stable in Doylestown, Bucks County, PA . 12-22-2015 – A third horse at the same stable developed clinical signs, with a course of clinical signs similar to the first two. The animal  was euthanized. 12-23-2015 (late PM)- All three dead horses at the Doylestown facility confirmed for neuropathic strain of EHV-1. 12-25-2015 - 4 of the horses in the highest risk zone at the Doylestown stable have fevers.  2 are the ones that had lower fevers a few days ago. 12-27-2015 – Two additional horses are now febrile. 12-31-2015 – A fourth horse was euthanized with clinical signs of EHM. Quarantine still in effect at the stable. December 24, 2015 Equine Herpes Viruses Doylestown, PA Confirmed case(s): Quarantine
There is a confirmed case of the neuropathogenic variant of EHV-1 (we received the results the night of December 23rd ) in a private, pleasure horse riding stable in Doylestown, PA (extreme Southeastern PA near Philadelphia). Thus far, three horses have been euthanized with clinical signs of EHM. There are two additional horses in the same facility that are febrile without neurologic signs to this point. One of the three euthanized horses had been shown at an event in New Jersey on December 12, 2015. Trace activity is underway. A Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture quarantine was imposed at the boarding stable in Doylestown on December 22nd. The Department is working closely with all equine stakeholders and reminding everyone of the importance of strict biosecurity applications in the control of this disease. The department is responding to this situation consistent with our science based EHV-1 response protocol. Minimum quarantine period is 21 days from the last significant clinical finding (e.g. fever) as well as the use of pcr testing for EHV-1 when appropriate. www.agriculture.state.pa.us
December 14, 2015 Strangles Okeechobee County, FL Confirmed case(s): Quarantine
A new strangles case originally reported by the treating veterinarian on December 14th after culture results returned positive for the disease. The property with 7 horses and numerous donkeys has been placed under quarantine. These is the second case for Okeechobee county and the 30th case for Florida in 2015.
