August 31, 2016 West Nile Virus Fremont County, WY Confirmed Case(s): No Quarantine
A new case of WNV has been reported in Fremont County, Wyoming. The affected horse was not vaccinated for WNV, and was displaying neurological signs. The horse is recovering.
August 31, 2016 Eastern Equine Encephalitis Forest and Vilas Counties, WI Confirmed Case(s): No Quarantine
Two horses in Wisconsin have been confirmed with Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE). One was an unvaccinated 2-month old Quarter horse filly in Forest County that developed acute illness including a fever and neurologic signs. The filly was humanely euthanized. The second was a 4-year-old Welsh Pony mare from Vilas County with an uncertain vaccination history. The mare became acutely febrile developed neurologic symptoms and was humanely euthanized after becoming recumbent.
August 31, 2016 West Nile Virus Kanabec County, MN Confirmed Case(s): No Quarantine
A new case of West Nile Virus has been reported in Kanabec County, Minnesota. Symptoms appeared on 8/22. The vaccination status of the 2 year old stallion is unknown; the horse is recovering
August 31, 2016 Rabies Brevard County, FL Confirmed Case(s): No Quarantine
On August 30, a new Rabies case was confirmed in Brevard County, Florida. The adult mare had no previous vaccine history and had not been off the premises in over a year. Clinical signs began on August 26 and the horse was euthanized for humane reasons the same day. This is the first confirmed Rabies case in Brevard County and the second confirmed case in Florida for 2016.
August 30, 2016 Eastern Equine Encephalitis Ocean and Morris Counties, NJ Confirmed case(s): Quarantine
A 1- year-old mare from Ocean County and a 3-year-old gelding from Morris County have tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE). The mare was vaccinated for EEE but the gelding was not and both have been euthanized. These are the second and third cases of EEE in NJ this year. August 30, 2016 West Nile Virus Petroleum County, MT Confirmed Case(s): No Quarantine
One case of West Nile Virus has been reported in Petroleum County, Montana by the Department of Public Health and Human Services. The vaccination status and outcome of the case is unknown. For more information go to http://dphhs.mt.gov/AboutUs/8-25-16firstcasesofwestnilevirus
August 30, 2016 West Nile Virus Boundary County, Idaho and Spokane, Lincoln, Pend Oreille Counties, WA Confirmed Case(s): No Quarantine
The Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (WADDL) at Washington State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine has reported 10 confirmed positive cases of West Nile Virus since August 9th. Positive cases were detected in Spokane, Lincoln, and Pend Oreille counties in Washington and Boundary County in northern Idaho. August 29, 2016 West Nile Virus Deschutes County, OR Confirmed Case(s): No Quarantine
A Deschutes County horse has tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV), marking the first detection of the disease in Oregon horses for the 2016 season. The affected horse is a 14-year old mare with no history of vaccination for WNV. The horse is under veterinary care and is responding to treatment. August 29, 2016 Eastern Equine Encephalitis Ulster County, NY Confirmed Case(s): No Quarantine
An unvaccinated, 11yr old mare was diagnosed with EEE this week. Owner first noticed symptoms on 8/22/2016. Vet came out to examine on the same day and noted the following: depression, trembling, stumbling, blindness, fever. Horse was symptomatically treated. On 8/23, vet returned to visit. Horse was down and non-responsive. Horse was euthanized on 8/23/2016. WNV and Rabies tests were negative.
August 29, 2016 West Nile Virus Kanabec, Clearwater, Mower, and Todd Counties, MN Confirmed Case(s): No Quarantine
Minnesota now has four more confirmed WNV cases; an unvaccinated 7 year old mare in Kanabec County (August 17), a 7 year old Fjord mare in Clearwater county (unvaccinated)(August 19), a vaccinated 10 year old Quarter Horse gelding in Mower County (August 13) and a 2 year old Appaloosa gelding in Todd County vaccinated on August 9th and sick on August 19. This brings the total in Minnesota to 11 horses in 2016.
