October 13, 2016 West Nile Virus Calhoun County, MI Confirmed Case(s): No Quarantine
On October 10, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development was notified of a confirmed case of West Nile virus (WNV). This is Michigan’s first reported case of WNV in equine for 2016. The affected horse is a five-month old filly in Calhoun County. On October 2, the filly began to develop signs of illness, including stumbling and lethargy. The unvaccinated filly is responding to treatment. The dam was vaccinated against WNV two weeks after foaling, and the filly is not yet weaned.
October 11, 2016 Eastern Equine Encephalitis Waupaca County, WI Confirmed Case(s): No Quarantine
A ~3-yr.-old unvaccinated Quarter Horse stallion from Waupaca County presented 10/2/16, unable to stand on its own, falling to the right, and eventually going down. The horse died on 10/3/16. There is no quarantine. That is Wisconsin’s 18th case of equine EEE this year.
October 11, 2016 Eastern Equine Encephalitis Allendale County, SC Confirmed Case(s): No Quarantine
The South Carolina State Veterinarian’s office received laboratory confirmation of one new EEE case. The case is an unvaccinated, 1 year old Quarter horse from Allendale County. The horse did not survive. This is the first confirmed case in this county this year. The total number of confirmed cases in SC in 2016 is now 15.
October 08, 2016 West Nile Virus San Joaquin County, CA Confirmed Case(s): No Quarantine
The California Department of Food and Agriculture has confirmed the states 20th case of equine West Nile Virus. An unvaccinated 6 month old Quarter Horse filly in San Joaquin County, California displaying neurologic signs was confirmed positive for West Nile Virus (WNV). The filly is recovering. October 05, 2016 West Nile Virus Benton County, MN Confirmed Case(s): No Quarantine
The Minnesota Board of Veterinary Medicine has confirmed a 19th case of WNV in Benton County. The vaccinated 22 year old QH gelding began showing hind leg incoordination on August 16th and was just recently diagnosed due to persisting clinical signs. The horse continues to show hind leg incoordination when carrying a rider.
October 05, 2016 Eastern Equine Encephalitis Waupaca, Langlade, Monroe, Chippewa, Eau Claire, Taylor, Forest Counties, WI Confirmed Case(s): No Quarantine
Wisconsin has had 7 additional confirmed cases of EEE. All of the horses have been euthanized or died on their own. All are nonvaccinates or under vaccinated. Waupaca County: 8-yr.-old Quarter Horse mare, not vaccinated; staggering and went down vocalizing with its tongue out. Euthanized 9/21/16. Langlade County: 11-yr.-old Quarter Horse mare, not vaccinated this year; became non-ambulatory with a wry neck and was beginning to seizure. Euthanized 9/25/16. ELISA IgM: Positive at 1:400 Monroe County: 2-yr.-old Quarter Horse mare, either nonvaccinated or under vaccinated; head-pressing, lethargic, ataxic. Euthanized 9/18/16. PCR Positive CT Value 24.4 Chippewa County: 1-yr.-old under-vaccinated (no vaccine this year) Thoroughbred filly; initially presented 9/24/16, febrile, depressed, lethargic, weak, nystagmus, seizure-like activity; went down 9/26 and died 9/27. Eau Claire County: 8-yr.-old under-vaccinated (possibly vaccinated 5 yrs. ago) Miniature Horse mare; presented 9/26/16, wobbly, depressed, decreased appetite, circling to left, twitching, and head pressing; went down late 9/28; euthanized 9/29 Taylor County: 13-yr.-old-unvaccinated Percheron mare; symptoms began 9/23/16 (hind limb weakness, stumbling; went down and was euthanized 9/24/16. Forest County: Miniature Horse, Vaccination history unknown This makes 17 confirmed positive equine EEE cases in WI this year
September 28, 2016 West Nile Virus Hennepin County, MN Confirmed Case(s): No Quarantine
The Minnesota Board of Veterinary Medicine has confirmed an 18th case of West Nile Virus for 2016. The 14-15 year old QH mare, located in Hennepin County, was found down in pasture and was unable to rise; the mare was vaccinated 5 days prior to being euthanized and had no previous vaccination status.
September 28, 2016 West Nile Virus Spokane and Stevens County, WA Confirmed Case(s): No Quarantine
The Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic lab has confirmed two more cases of West Nile Virus. A 6 month old QH filly with no vaccination history was confirmed positive in Spokane County; prognosis is good. A 10 year old QH mare with unknown vaccination history was confirmed positive in Stevens County; prognosis is good.
September 28, 2016 West Nile Virus Olmstead County, MN Confirmed Case(s): No Quarantine
The Minnesota Board of Veterinary Medicine has confirmed the 17th case of West Nile Virus for 2016. The 18 year old QH mare was first observed showing clinical signs on September 15th in Olmstead County. The mare was unvaccinated but is recovering.
September 28, 2016 West Nile Virus Grant and McClain Counties, OK Confirmed Case(s): No Quarantine
The Oklahoma Department of agriculture has confirmed two more WNV positive horses today bringing the total up to 5 for 2016. A yearling QH stallion, located in Grant County was showing severe neurologic signs. Vaccination history is unknown. A yearling QH filly, located in McClain County, was showing severe neurologic signs and was euthanized. Vaccination history is unknown.
