January 04, 2017 Equine Herpes Viruses Kentucky, United States Information Only
Due to the outbreak of equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy confirmed in several barns at the Fairgrounds Racetrack in Louisiana and considering that horses had left the track to area training centers while the virus was circulating, the Kentucky Office of State Veterinarian is directing that no horse that has resided or been on a Louisiana race track or training center since December 10, 2016 shall be allowed entry onto a Kentucky racetrack at this time. Any horse that has been in these environments must come with certification that they have been removed a minimum of 30 days to qualify for entry onto a Kentucky racetrack in addition to their meeting standard health requirements. The Kentucky Office of State Veterinarian will have inspector(s) monitoring the daily movement of horses onto tracks currently conducting live racing, will continue to monitor developments in Louisiana, and will adjust mitigating strategies as needed.
January 03, 2017 Equine Herpes Viruses New Orleans, LA Outbreak Update
On January 2, 2017 a horse in quarantine barn #14 spiked a low grade fever with no other clinical signs and was isolated for testing. Another horse in the receiving barn that had been treated for a knee condition spiked a high fever with no other clinical signs and it was quarantined to the barn for testing at the LA Animal Disease Diagnostic Lab. The horse from barn #14 had PCR testing results on blood, nasal swabs, and nasal lavage that were negative for EHV-1. That horse will be tested again in 72 hours. The horse from the receiving barn had PCR testing results on blood, nasal swabs, and nasal lavage that were positive for EHV-1 non-neuropathogenic or wild type strain. That horse was placed in quarantined isolation and the receiving barn and horses there were placed under quarantine. Due to the nature of the receiving barn where day riders are required to check in, the Fairgrounds Racetrack is now under movement restrictions with no horses allowed to enter or leave. Racing will continue at the track. Movement restrictions are also in place at Delta Downs Racetrack in Vinton, LA due to the day racers that visit both tracks. Racing will continue at Delta Downs also. Epidemiological investigations into movements on and off of both tracks are on-going and LDAF, USDA, and Racing Commission veterinarians continue to work with track personnel in monitoring the incident.
