The Florida Department of of Agriculture and Consumer Services confirmed a case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis in a 5-year old unvaccinated horse with clinical signs starting on 8/27/17 in Santa Rosa County. The horse was euthanized  and is the 3 case of EEE in Florida in 2017.

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection confirmed West Nile Virus in a Standardbred mare presenting with ataxia and facial twitching last month.  The mare died despite treatment and the mare's 3 month old foal was not affected. This is the 15th case of WNV in Wisconsin in 2017.

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection confirmed Eastern Equine Encephalitis in an 8-year old unvaccinated Quarter Horse gelding with neurologic signs (stumbling, grinding of teeth, and head pressing) on 9/4/17. The horse was euthanized when it went down on 9/5/17. This is the 14th case of EEE in Wisconsin in 2017.

September 15, 2017 West Nile Virus Riverside and Tehama Counties, CA Confirmed Case(s): No Quarantine

The California Department of Food and Agriculture confirms two cases of West Nile Virus. An unvaccinated 4 year old Andalusian mare in Riverside County and an unvaccinated 12 year old Quarter Horse gelding in Tehama County displaying neurologic signs tested positive for WNV. The Quarter Horse gelding was euthanized due to the severity of the clinical signs. The Andalusian mare is recovering. For 2017, a total of 13 cases of equine WNV have been confirmed in California. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection confirmed Eastern Equine Encephalitis in an unvaccinated 17-year old Quarter Horse mare. The horse was febrile, found down and non-responsive, and was euthanized on 8/27/17. This was the 12th EEE case in Wisconsin in 2017.

The Idaho State Department of Agriculture confirmed West Nile Virus in a 2-year old Appaloosa mare that had ataxia and muscle tremors. The horse is responding to medical treatment. The Idaho State Department of Agriculture confirmed West Nile Virus in a 5-year old Quarter Horse mare that had not been vaccinated for WNV.  Neurologic symptoms seen on 9/5/17 progressed from servere ataxia to seizures and an inability to stand. The horse was euthanized.  

September 14, 2017 Eastern Equine Encephalitis Taylor County, WI Confirmed Case(s): No Quarantine

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture has confirmed Eastern Equine Encephalitis in Taylor County, Wisconsin in an unvaccinated 4.5-year old draft cross. The mare began showing neurologic signs of stumbling and blindness and had a fever on 9/4/17. The mare was euthanized on 9/5/17. This is Wisconsin's 13th confirmed case of EEE in 2017.

The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets has confirmed two cases of equine West Nile virus. A 26-year-old mare in Tompkins County started developing clinical signs on September 8th including pronounced twitching and jerking movements in the forelegs, neck, and muzzle and reluctancy to move. A 5-year-old gelding in Orleans County started showing clinical signs on September 5th. The horse was off his feed and had a slight fever. Within 24 hours he exhibited stiffness in the front limbs, quivering of lips and twitching around the head. Neither horse had been recently vaccinated; both are recovering.

The Idaho State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) has confirmed a case of equine West Nile Virus in Ada County. The 2-year-old Arabian filly had been vaccinated as a yearling but no booster had been given. The horse presented with ataxia and difficulty standing; she underwent treatment and is recovering. This is Idaho’s third case of WNV in 2017.
